Total beginners advice pls?

Actually there's a third option. Mount the camera on a tripod, take multiple shots and merge them into a panorama in post.

Because? Snap two or three overlapping images. There's a lot of free apps and online photo editors that will merge them.

Mostly because I felt it was better to focus on operating a camera before worrying about adding even more to the equation.

First learn how to take shots. Then learn how to manipulate if that's what you want to do.

I would strongly encourage the OP to work with someone who has done photography and willing to guide.
I would also say tot he OP, post your pictures and give specific data so that others can guide you along.
