TPF Opinions on Ken Rockwell

If you have the mental ability to take what he says as one mans opinion, and nothing more- he is fine to read. Just because his site comes up high in the google search engine does not make him an expert. I see his site as a very small step above the random reviews I read on sites such as Amazon.com. I would not give him any more weight than anyone else here on this board (excluding er11111ca and enrose, they just annoy me)

I especially liked his write-up on the alien caves in New Mexico.

Not the kind of aliens from south of the border either.

The article on how to pick a wife was pretty good too.


I think you have to have a good sense of humor, and a good BS detector to read anything on his site.

Read the 'About' section. He even says in there that half the crap he writes is nothing but a joke.

The general feeling I get when people here talk about him is "moron". *EDIT* I'd like to point out that I've never been to his site, so I don't know. That's just what I get from what others have said when someone mentions they've read something on his site.

Seconded loudly, but from time to time he does actually produce something useful. He doesn't comprehend much (especially about optics in particular), but he is good at gathering information. His opinions are basically superficial at best to worthless at worst. The problem is he doesn't comprehend anything beyond a very superficial level. He's like a parrot that can repeat what it hears but doesn't grasp anything at all.

Hey, a broken clock is right twice a day, and even a blind squirrel can stumble onto a nut on occasion. :lmao:

He's interesting to read, as long as you are reading his site from the standpoint of, "This website is for entertainment purposes only. Do not make purchasing decisions that will set you back 1000's of dollars based on the opinions on this website!"

His website is about as valuable as any other website out there (not saying much), but for actual useful information, there's far better places to go.

He did make me laugh with his views on RAW users tho, very entertaining.

This thread reminds me a lot of this XKCD strip.

He's got a pretty useful lens compatibility chart for Nikon which I've used many times. But overall, if you want lens reviews, don't go to KR. There's no actual data. Go to somewhere like photozone.de as they have actual empirical data and photo examples to back up their data.

I've seen KR compared to Chuck Norris a few times. And it's true, because against all odds, some people seem to think he's awesome.
