Transferring 35 mm slides to digital.

If this is posted to the wrong board please excuse me and feel free to move it to the correct board.

I have years and years of 35mm slides I and my in-laws have taken and I'd like to save them to CDs, my PC and an external drive. I've never had, or used, a slide scanner before and would like to know what type scanner would be relatively easy to use/learn and not be too expensive, $150.00 or less. I would like it to scan the slides I have, negatives and possibly photographs. My primary task would be to scan the slides and negatives, second would be the photos. Once I get them into my PC my next task would be to learn how to correctly use Photoshop! That is going to be another story.

The FIRST thing you need to know is that depending on how many slides, negatives or prints you have, it is going to take you a LONG LONG LONG time to digitize them all. you may want to consider sending them out to a service that will do this for you.

There are plenty of lower end scanners in your price range that can scan slides and negatives that would be around your price range. Start with looking at the epson and canon scanners.

Once I get them into my PC my next task would be to learn how to correctly use Photoshop! That is going to be another story.

Unless your doing advanced photo manipulation you are probably NOT going to need the full Photoshop Photoshop Elements may be a better choice.

What you are definitively going to need is a good photo organization application like Apple Aperture or Adobe Lightroom.

I suggest you build/buy/borrow a light box and a magnifying glass. Lay your slides out on the light box and look at each one to decide if you'll scan or pass. Not all photos are worth turning into bits and bytes. Scanning, processing and archiving takes a LONG time. I know, I've done it.
