I don't want to get into a new kit where I'd be buying a new line of glass and I don't want to bring 3 lenses. Again, I have nice glass for specific purpose but I'm just going to visit my sister for a week and don't want to lug a lot of gear...if I can avoid it

You haven't got to take it everywhere something a break can do you good, if I lived bearer you could have borrowed 1 of my Leicas for a week

Not a totally bad idea. I did that recently on a trip to Orlando with my daughter and some friends. We used (gasp!) our cell phones to take some candid snaps and that was it. Of course, I've been there before with my DSLR so that made it easier. It was very liberating and I was definitely more in the moment than when I have my camera with me.
