Traveling to Ashville, NC - what to see/shoot?

So Labor day weekend I am traveling to Ashville NC with family and I am curious if there are any good locations to see around there? Photograph? I am going to be in a cabin outside of the city if that helps. I am looking for old structures, waterfalls, great views, interesting locations, or anything really. I don't have any long lenses if that helps. Thanks in advance.

For waterfalls, the Asheville region offers some nice options for day trips because there are not many near the city. For day trips try Hickory Nut Gorge, Shinning Rock, Brevard (excellent) Cherokee and Mount Mitchel. A little ways out of town on Hwy 74, you will find Bat Cave, Chimney Rock and Lake Lure (remember Dirty Dancing?)

The city itself is quite bohemian and is fun to walk around for sights, sounds and smells. Black Mountain just north of Asheville is an artist community worth a look. It has become slightly commercialized over the years, but some really cool people to strike up a conversation with.

Of course, Biltmore is there.

That doesn't really narrow it down much, does it?!
For old buildings/structures, I'd point him to the River Arts District of downtown Asheville -- along the French Broad River, as its name suggests. Really, any place in downtown Asheville will afford him opportunities to do 'street photography'. Asheville is full of buskers, hippies and other quasi-homeless types that can make for interesting portraits or wider street scenes.
For waterfalls, geez, the sky's the limit around here... but it takes some driving (and hiking) to reach most of them. Try this website to start:

For great views, he needs to get up on the Blue Ridge Parkway... any number of overlooks can be accessed. But photography up there may be limited by haze or other weather/atmospheric conditions.
[FONT=&amp]Biltmore Estate is a famous/historic (and very scenic) chateau-style mansion in south Asheville, that is kind of the typical tourist thing to do, but it DOES have some great photo opp.s However, I think it costs about $60 per person to access the grounds (via a shuttle bus, I think). I just checked we are staying to the east of the city between 74 and 40.

p.s. The NC Arboretum, a few miles south of Asheville, has some great trails and wonderful opp.s for plant/flower photography.
