what do you guys think, trees in the foreground a bit annoying?

Now that you're asking ... yes, they might be a tad distracting. But I feel I can say only little at 500x333px ... it is very SMALL. The clouds, however, look GOOD from what I can see now.

Better ... might be way large for some, but just fits my screen in one go.

Now I wonder: is this a black and white negative photo, or one taken in black and white mode but digitally, or is it a conversion? If it is the latter, how did you go about converting?

It seems a bit grey all in all, I feel that the subject as much might merit some stronger contrasts. Some real black and SOME real white, where it is to be had.
 
this is a conversion, i basically just grayscaled it, then added some contrast

Try to convert your colour photos via the Channel Mixer - it is more fun and the outcome can be so much more varied. Channel Mixer, tick to "Grayscale", and then shift the levers and look what you get. ;)
