Tripod apex? Loose

I bought a new ball head and tripod and after putting it together and taking it out I noticed something is wrong with it or I didn't put it together right.
When I attach the ball head the screw I attach it to is loose. Its not the ball head. But the screw in the apex I think its called

There's a hex head at the opposite side on my tripod, need a very long allen key (probably a custom job) to get to it through the centre column though. Could try gripping the screw from the thread end and see if you can tighten it from that side (hand tight should do). If you can't get it to tighten the thread may have been stripped.
