Tripod or Monopod?

for hiking I would take a tripod if i were to take group shots, I would take the monopod for long walks with a heavy lens. If you would be able to use your camera handheld you wouldn't really need a monopod, unless its darkish when you are hiking or want to use something as a cane to help you walk (which is usually what I see people in photos doing lol).
