the 718b has a limt of abt 6lbs so id asume it would be ok for a d40with a 55mm lens? something stronger for a biger lens?

the 718b is for POINT AND SHOOT cameras. and it has an integrated head. bad choice unless you wanna eventually see your D40 on the ground in pieces. keep in mind, other things thats affect its stability are wind, bumps, etc. what is your budget? if you don't mind buying used i gave you a link to a great deal. seems you're kinda intent on buying something that will not suit your needs or protect your equipment.

i have the 3021 but this is the 3021PRO which allows horizontal mounting of the center coulmn and has a greater load capacity. if this goes for less than $70 bucks its a steal. very solid tripod. they're out there, just gotta look.
