Trying B&W straight from the camera

They seem a little dark to me. I think if they were brighter, we could see more detail. My phone always shows things darker. Does anyone else think they're dark?

Jeo,
I meant the black and white part. Shot it picture at Mono from the camera.
and I didn't change anything else beside adding my water mark and lens correction from lightroom.

I shot this at F/4 with shutter speet set at 1/60. do you think decreasing the shutter speed with give it a little bit more detail?

I didn't have my tripod and decreasing the shutter was blurry.

To me B+W straight from the camera is film unless you can afford the Leica Monochrom

I can't pull the EXIF. What ISO were you set at? May be your issue on the waterfall. As for the landscape, it looks to me like you are shooting straight into the sun. The camera is probably metering heavy on the sun, leaving the rest underexposed. With light direct from the sky and also heavily reflecting off of the water, that's a tricky one to cover all of the ranges.

The only other idea I have is that the whitebalance is set to manual. If you had it set for something else, it may have thrown you off. Other than that, I'm out.

To my eyes they're muddy and grey.
A successful B&W needs to be sharp and clean with a full range of tones. I'm just not getting that from these. Sorry

Most of us who do digital bw do not shoot it that way in camera, but post-process either in ACR or PS where we can adjust how the colors are converted. This gives a better bw image with better tonal range and then further contrast adjustments, usually with curves or levels, are still necessary to get an effective image.

Good point. If you are shooting in RAW (which is usually recommended), setting the camera to b&w does nothing more than give you a b&w preview on the LCD, so you are converting later anyway.

Agreed, shoot RAW. As for your pictures, even if they weren't shot it raw you should be able to brighten them up a little bit. Obviously there's a limit, but you really don't need to go that far. #1 would be great if it were brighter. #2 is "eh" to me, it would be better if you were higher up(I mean just if the camera were about 6-7feet above where you were standing), the foreground is what kills it.
