OP...forget all that stuff. Don't sweat it. Just send in some self portraits of yourself and things will be fine.

When you shoot manual you don't need to change things too much unless you changing the lighting conditions. And if light is changing just pick aperture or shutter priority. But with tricky lighting, they will be off. So nothing replaces personal judgement.

In the old days we did not have all this auto crap. We had to guess at the exposure, focus and get the picture with 1 shot a lot of the time. The poor togs nowadays can't live without auto focus and all those BS idiot settings they breast feed you guys with.

But unless your comfortable with your cam and abilites you will miss a lot of shots. Shooting pix should become 2nd nature to you. You don't fret and think what to do...you see, you compose, you focus and shoot.

The other side of the coin is this OP. We don't always get the image we are after with 1 shot. The flower took me 30 or 40 shots to get. Maybe a better tog than myself could have done it with 4 or 5 shots. But that is what it took me.

The biker took me 15 or 20 shots to get.

Now, shooting kids is different than shooting flowers. And sometimes we will miss a shot no matter how we try. Just learn your manual controls, learn to be comfortable with all the basics of photography..and blast away!
