Can others edit my Photos
Photos NOT OK to edit
I am just getting back into the world of photography and would like to make money at it eventually. As I am re-educating my self with my camera and equipment, I would like to start building a portfolio. What is the best way to accomplish this?

This is a hobby for me, but I'm enrolled in the following program offered at my university:

  • Photography Introduction
  • Photography Intermediate
  • Studio Lighting Introduction
  • Business Essentials for Photographers
  • Digital Image Management
  • Studio Lighting Advanced

Take your camera and get up from your chair would be probably the best start ;)

Ha, thanks! I know I need to take as many photos as possible. I go out everyday and take many outdoor landscape photographs but I want to expand on that. I have been thinking about asking people if I could take pictures of them for my portfolio. In return I would send them the pictures either by email or I would mail them a cd with their images on it. What do you think about that?

It's a start. Give it a try. The hardest step can be just to get started, asking people.

Are you familair with the model release statutes in your state/country?

TPF is an international forum and you don't show your location in your profile. There could be legal implications using photos of people in your portfolio.

Thank you! That didn't cross my mind!

before you make a portfolio you have to ask yourself what type of photographer you want to be. This may not be very clear at first.

Maybe, just maybe, before you go out and start shooting a lot of images, you might want to do some serious reading on image composition. This site might be a place to start - Photography Composition Articles Library and you might look at - Advanced Composition -- Part I which is the first of a series of three web articles on composition - the link to the following article is at the bottom of the web site.

There are, of course, numerous books on the subject - Bryan Peterson - Learning to See Creatively and a host of others which you can find with an appropriate search on Amazon or any other book seller's site. HTh.

Cheers,
