It was really the wrong time of day to be taking photos. Bright sunny day, about 2 pm...

I just used my 18-55mm kit lens.

I had the ISO bumped up a bit too high (800) after shooting in a reptile house and forgot to turn it down after going back outside.

Hi, ratman, I think you should think more about composition and angels before you push the shutter. If you shoot horizontally or up high with a good composition, the 1st pic can be better looking. I don't know how to cc 2nd photo. :( An amateur's ideas.

Yeah, composition aside, I'd work on getting a sharper image... either my a faster shutter speed or maybe a mono-tripod. Kind of cumbersome at a zoo, but a monopod sometimes can make the difference. Keep shootin!

I agree that they should have been sharper.

As far as the composition, I thought what I had worked. I see that everyone is in agreement that it doesn't . What could I do to make it better?

I would have gotten more of the bird in the first shot or cropped in closer so that it fills more of the frame. There is a lot of dead space above and to the left of the birdie in the 1st one. :) They are pretty birds.

I generally point people to a study of the Rule Of Thirds and where the power points are. It should be a Suggestion Of Thirds, because once you understand the theory, you'll know when you can totally disregard it... but anyway, it's a great starting point in composition.
