You have to know and understand the guidelines before you can effectively modify/bend/break them. So you still need to read and understand what's in the book. Anything less means you're just wandering around in the dark. It is virtually impossible to do something in photography that hasn't already been done, repeatedly.

Clients have an emotional involvement and few are versed in the technical aspects of photography. Plus, many clients don't have the cajones to tell the photographer what they really think of the photos, and just say,"Oh I love them." to avoid making waves. Take client remarks with a grain of salt if you want to up your game

Here, people offering C&C have no emotional involvement with the subject in the photo and many of us offer C&C solely on the technical merits of an image.

Retail photography client love is more about your personality, than it is about your photographs. A key point to remember when you plan your marketing.
