Hello...I haven't posted here for a long time, but I am trying to get back into photography. i liked the texture/pattern I got in this shot but what is bothering me is that I can't straighten it...maybe I wasn't standing parallel to the subject? I feel like the tonal range (is that the right term I'm looking for) isn't ideal either...I know you want to capture absolute black to absolute white, but what do you do if your subject doesn't offer all of those ranges?

You DO have the full tonal range from absolute black to absolute white in that photograph. Look at the histogram in whatever you are using to edit photographs with. There is absolute black in some of the shadows between the rocks at the bottom and absolute white on the left side of the right rock (or whatever it is) on the first row up.

To answer your question, most editing software has the option to stretch the histogram or to set specific white and black points in the image. That is how you adjust the black and white points if your image lacks full tonal range.

Some editing software also allows perspective control editing, however when it is used it normally crops a great deal out of the image. Specifically, when the perspective is corrected in an image such as yours the middle is stretched and the edges are cropped so that everything has the proper perspective. When I tried it with this one there was not a lot left over so the shot was effectively ruined.

Thanks for your reply! I guess I should just leave it as is and just accept the odd perspective. I seem to get this alot...maybe my head is screwed on wrong or something.

Perspective does that. Just like railroad tracks grow together as they go into the distance. This can be corrected in Photoshop... but I wouldn't correct it with this shot! It wouldn't look natural. Example below...

I'm not so sure about this one.

It's not consistent enough to be truly an abstract and the debris doesn't work for me, and the angle is strange (in a bad way).

I do like the b&w conversion. You really nailed that part, imo.
