Uploading avatar

I'm having some challenges trying to upload a photo as my avatar. What are the size and/or file type criteria?

It has to be a very small file, I think it was 60x80....

The page where you upload says 'It is recommended that you use an image that is at least 400x400 pixels."

This one is 541x541 pixels, and 29k (.png)

I think it was 541*541px

I think you can go with larger dimensions, as long as the file size isn't too big.
