I just bought a SB-600 speedlight to experiment with some different lighting techniques and styles. I'm pretty excited to try macro shots and self portraits with the new speedlight.

My question is this: can a D40 support the speedlight in a wireless off-camera setting? I'd love to try the light from different angles, but I can't really figure out the process for setting up the wireless off-camera mode by reading the manual (it's a little dense and I'm totally new at this). I looked on Ken Rockwell's page and from what I gathered, the D40 is not capable of supporting the speedlight in an off-camera mode. Is this correct? Thanks in advance.

I have a D40 as well and you can use it off camera but you need wireless flash triggers.

After reading a lot of reviews I bought these ones for $30 on dealsextreme. They are cheap but very reliable and have worked great for me so far.

EDIT: Just noticed those ones are sold out, there are other nice ones out there but I can not remember any off the top of my head.

darkhunter is spot on. you can certainly use a 600 with a d40, but to go off cam, wireless triggers will be needed.
i went ahead and got the cactus V4s, and i freaking LOVE them.
order em quick though, as they ship from china and take a couple weeks. worth the wait IMO though.
going off cam is gonna change your world.

Alright question about those, what if you got 2 speedlights? Ofcourse you need the 2 shoes for them, but wouldn't you need 2 triggers or does 1 trigger trigger multiple ones?

You need a transmitter on the camera hot shoe and as many receivers as you have speedlights.

The inexpensive radio triggers have 4 channels, all the receivers must be set what ever channel the transmitter is set to.

Only having 4 channels, if there are more than 4 other photographers around also using radio triggers, another photographers transmitter may trigger your speedlights.

I recommend a different brand of inexpensive radio triggers, because you can mount 2 speedlights on each receiver doubleing the amount of light.

iSHOOT - PT-04 C - Wireless Remote Radio Flash Trigger set with 3 receivers.

You can actually use one flash to trigger the other so technically you only really need one receiver but it's not as reliable. Best option would be get one transmitter and two receivers

It depends on the speedlight. An SB-600 cannot be triggered by the flash from another speedlight, unless you buy an accessory optical trigger for it, $12 and up.
