While cleaning up I found a nice Vivitar Macroflash 5000 that was used on a Nikon SLR. My question is, can I use this ring flash on my digital Nikon D2x / D300 / 90 camera units?
I hear some older flashes are bad to use due to voltage differences.

Can I safely use this?

Most Nikons can handle high, high flash trigger voltages, without famage to the camera. Look online for a flash trigger voltage page, for more information.

Nikon DSLRs can handle up to 250 volt flash units as long as the flash units don't have a negative voltage.
Warning: Negative voltages or voltages over 250 V applied to the camera's sync terminal could not only prevent normal operation, but may damage the sync circuit of the camera or flash. Check with the strobe manufacturer for voltage specifications.
