If you're the type to coddle your camera as many are then there's no real point in having them. Take your camera home at night and polish the lens with your expensive lens cleaning fluid and microfibre cloth.

Well, I am not one of the camera coddlers When I sleep outdoors for 2 weeks (also in the sand sometimes), I usually seriously clean each lens once or twice on such a trip only. And I do not use anything expensive for the lens (Much more effort with the sensor though)

But I agree, that there are applications, where you would want some extra protection, say behind a motorbike in the sand or any situation where mineral particles may blast towards you.
