What's with the fluffy orange umbrellas in Germany?

I've only spent a few hours in Germany, walking around Frankfurt on my way home from Kazakhstan, but I saw some umbrellas just like this.

heh heh... the girls seem more interested in each others company... i think the guys are more interested in the lady taking their photograph from a boat!

They do think they're pretty cool though don't they...

hehehe . . . . who knows, maybe they were two couples who just needed some hangout time.

but man oh man i don't think those chairs could be at a more awkward distance apart. close enough to hear each other and see very closely, but far enough away to make any conversation between the two groups very forced and strange.
