Hello and welcome to the forum. My recommendation would be to get yourself a basic book on digital photography and try and understand the basics of manual mode photography. Post questions here of things you don't understand. Practice. Post your images here and ask for feedback on how they can be improved. Most of all have fun.

Did you get a hard copy of your camera's manual? That would be a good place to start when wanting to get off Auto. Taking lots of pictures and posting them here for feedback and advice will also help you learn.
