Want to build a website... where to start...

Lets face it, facebook just isn't the place to properly showcase your work, its a great socializing and marketing tool if properly used, but if you really want to showcase your photos, you need more control over layout etc...

So where do I start????

I don't really have the time to start from the ground up, nor the money and professional help I would need to just build my own.

But what is everyone's consensus with using a template site such as Zenfolio or Sitewelder?

I would like to start my own site, preferably a template site like mentioned above, but don't know what users' experiences are.

For those who have used these template sites, what are your thoughts? What site should I use?

Keep in mind, my photography is a HOBBY not a profession, I just want a nice layout to showcase my photos in a better way than facebook and flickr can.

My website is run with Zenfolio. You should start with that and get the cheapest plan. Once you are ready to start making $$, it is an easy transition.

Yes, it is hosted by Zenfolio. If you use the cheapest option, you cant use a custom URL and you cant make profit out of prints.

Wordpress is another option. You can host directly on Wordpress or a 3rd party hoster such as GoDaddy that supports Wordpress. There are thousands of themes to choose from.

I was faced with this a couple years ago. I used BlueHosts, you can get your own .com, they host and have lots of free tools. I built mine in Concrete5. They backup, restore, everything, and are cheap. JDS
