Want to buy a Porsche for parents... where to start?

I want to get a new Porsche Cayenne for my parents, but I don't know where to start. I have been to a few dealers in NJ, NY, and Michigan, and none of them will knock a cent off of the price. They all claim that Porsche Cayennes sell out before they get to the show room floor. Truth or lie, doesn't matter. I don't know anyone who works for VW or its subsidiary to get a discount code, so that route won't work. Does anyone know what is my best approach to get a good price on a new Cayenne? Truecar.com seems to have some "certified dealers" listed, but I don't know if that's the best price either. Any input is much appreciated.

I'll tell you a TRUE story. When we decided to buy us a new SUV with all the bells and whistles, we passed by a Lexus dealer. Unfortunately before that, we went to a hardware store to buy some stuffs for my garden and were dressed in our "work clothes", drove an old reliable Mitshubishi (maybe we should have brought our Mercedes Benz SLK 350 instead before going in to Lexus.)

Though what we were wearing at the time were clean but oldish looking, we do not know what was wrong when we went inside the Lexus dealership. We were snobbed like hell. No one wanted to talk to us nor entertain us nor asked what we are looking for...Mind you, my husband is a true blue Yankee Doodle Doo. Surprised at the attitude of the staff and the manager of the store, next door was an Acura dealer. We decided to go there. We were entertained like as if we were really customers and they were willing to show us an SUV we wanted, invited us for a test drive and all that crap. We ended up ordering a brand new Acura right then and there with all the bells and whistles anyone can ever think of a car for that year. We still have that car and still happy with our purchase.

So in short, go to a Porche dealership and see how they treat you first. Then go to another and see if the price is within your range as from that other store. Go home then google exactly what you want. You might be surprised.

BTW I am not a Porche person and I love my SUV.

haha simalar thing happened to me, this was when I was a builder. I had just finished on site and id been waiting to buy my new bike all month, finally decided to just go after work because if i went home first I would have been told to relax and just wait by my wife (at the time lol).

Anyway went into a dealer in the North Shore of Auckland with my steel caps and singlet lol, the bike I was looking at was a new Yamaha R6. After about 20 mins of looking around and waiting for the guys doing nothing to come up and help I asked someone for some assistance, the salesman came up and said "Nice to dream eh"

I told him im looking to buy and with a smart arse tone he said "You want to look at finance" and asked if I had a licence as if i wouldnt be able to get one. He walked away and talked to his mate for another 5 mins then came back with a hire purchase form and put it on the seat of the bike then answerd his cell phone, sounded like his girlfriend or something lol.

I just said "All good mate" and walked away, went next door to another dealer accross the street and maybe an hour later walked out with the keys to my brand new R6. (paid cash btw)

After I got home I was still pretty pissed off about the douche bag at the first shop, but excited about my bike, so I got changed into my bike gear and got a lift to the dealer to pick it up. BUT i left my dirty steel caps on lol. Got my new bike rode it right up on the foot path to the front door of the first dealer and said to the same guy I was looking for some new bike boots for my new R6 lmao. should have seen the look on his face, bought some Alpine Star boots and left with a big smile on my face. (left my muddy boots at the shop hahaha)

Personally, I don't doubt that they sell out quick in your area. If they are selling out at full price then I wouldn't expect anyone to give you a discount. You can try finding dealers that are in less populated areas, just be willing to drive a bit to get there. The issue there is that all these dealers can search each others inventory. If the dealers by you are sold out, they can get cars from other dealers on swaps, or buy them outright. It helps keep inventory fairly fluid. Either way, I'd say good luck.

Have you looked at the Audi or VW versions? It's the same platform, and more shared architecture than anyone in a Porsche dealer is willing to admit. Outside of the engine and suspension tuning and interior design, they're essentially the same vehicle.

I personally think all Porsches are glorified Beetles. But my parents love them, so who am I to judge... I'm not going to spend 70K and buy them a Maserati because they won't like it. The car is for my parents, not me and not anyone else. And after I eventually get this car for them, I'll still joke with them and say that I'm not coming home for Thanksgiving because I can't bear the sight of the Cayenne.

I looked in NY/NJ (where my parents are) and Michigan (where I am). I'd imagine Porsches aren't as highly demanded near Detroit as they are near New York, but the prices are higher on average.

You need to offer them a real, solid number. Figure about a 10% discount, and offer them your deal. If they turn it down, go somewhere else.

WHere to start? Why not start with your childhood, and what it was that they did to make you wish to get back at them with a Cayenne...then go from there.
