Watching Plane Landings

THIS...

...is awesome!

And you didn't even get arrested for being a terrorist! (For having a camera pointed at airplanes at an airport. :lmao: I feel like I heard a story of that happening to someone a couple months back.)

I know and my middle name is Bin  like........yeah
But no it's a pretty populated area with TONS of people with cameras. Matter of fact, I was side by side w/ another photog who also came with a 5D with 70-200 2.8 Sigma lens. We chatted and swapped card. But I was the only one with the white lens :lmao:

What they're doing is landing with one wing low into the prevailing wind to compensate for the crosswind. This allows them to descend and touchdown straight instead of at an off-angle to the runway.

Love it, and I love how you can see the wheels and how it's landing a little uneven. The other one where the wheels are tipped even more looks a bit scary!

I think this one looks a little scarier.

NICE! I'd thank you both if this was an aircraft forum hahaha

BTW, did you guys see the "World's Extreme Airports" on History channel??? CRAZY! I think I saw that one in there also

BTW isn't that the airport that had to be closed down?? The one that caused many deaths from plane crash

I believe you are correct, it did close in 1998. Didn't mean to hijack your thread, I enjoyed looking at the images you posted, looks like a fun place to hang out and take pics.

I love it. There's a dedicated plane spotting location at CVG here in Cincinnati but it's too far away to get shots like this.

Thank you for the inspiration! I live near LAX and there is a place one can go and see this very type of shot :) Which I really like, BTW.

You're welcome April!

Jafo it's all good  It's a pretty fun place. I mean it's a large enough park for a picnic, if you can deal w/ the plane landing noise. But I noticed there's actually a bike/walk trail there and I guess it goes toward DC.

JC it's not all that to be honest. I wouldn't drive too far away just to do it because you'll get bored after a few shots. I did. I mean it's just the same thing over and over and over. It was just on the way form DC back home so I stopped by.

i got close to 1000 photos today at one of the local airports around here, plenty of planes landing... like these:

Actually I meant that the designated plane spotting location is too far away from the runway. Even with my 70-300, I can't get in all that close. But yeah I hear ya, it is the same thing over and over and gets old.

Awesome shots, and cross wind landings are a lot of fun, you have to snap the plane back to center line just before touching down adding a little more thrill to each landing lol. I am only a couple months away from my pilots license and cant wait to get some great aerial shots of the cape, and coast line.

Cool shots! I really like the one of the underbelly too! Nice job!

Nice collection of shots. Nothing beats Princess Juliana Airport on St. Marteen for plane spotting. That is if you don't mind getting some sand in your camera.

Better bring a wide angle lens! :D

Second last, the smoke may be from the wheels as it looks like he may have touched down on the button.

Oh Ron, that was the only picture where the plane was getting ready to take off. It's the extra thrust building before the plane started moving. Smoke came from turbine.

OK, that explains the smoke on landing.

I have worked airside at Goose Bay & Toronto International & never took a pic. Never crossed my mind @ the time. I'm thinking of a time I was right beside the runway as two Mirage jet fighters took off side by side - talk about loud when they went by.

I bet! If I could, I'd love to have taken a picture of a concord landing or taking of on his final voyage. That would have been a cool shot and possibly worth a lot of money too.

But Ron, it's never too late, if there's an airport why not give it a try when it gets warmer?
