wedding shots

now for some more culture shock...

Oh kay....

About now the wedding is starting. First thing I like to do is to decide who I'm going to shoot going down the aisle. Im old fashioned enought that I like to shoot all the bridesmaids though nobody ever buys anything. If i were starting today I wouldnt bother.

It probably is still a good idea to shoot the bride and her father coming down the aisle. The easy way if you don't trust your auto focus is to set it all up before hand so you know where you will be and where they will be when you shoot. Makes it much easier.

then again all weddings arent in the giant hall...

The colors change on me everything I load them here im sorry.

and of course you have to shoot the wedding party...

Okay you have to shoot the guys the girls then all of them together I have no idea why nobody ever buys them but they want them in the album..

I don't have a photo to post for this but a fun shot is when all the men in the wedding party hold up the bride and take photos. They always come out so cute!

For me it is all about the non traditional shots. Jackson hosts millions of dollars in weddings because of it's natural background as opposed to a church with with walls. As you know I have only shot one wedding and I plan to keep it that way. At any rate I am a fan of the non traditional, showing love and joy shots.

Lots of people are these days. The problem with that is if you get to much into that you wont have the whole set of memories. Who stood up with you ect. You have to do at least some documentary kinds of things tossed in.. That is just my opinion of course.

I do have a couple of new age photographers who tell me they have swung back to make many of the traditional shots in new ways though.

Since no wedding every starts on time....

this isnt green on my monitor before it gets here it always happens for some reason. And it always has artifacts that dont show up here or on the host image I dont reallyunderstand but at least you get the idea..

And of course the sweet and romantic shots of the bride and groom.

I totally agree, that is the thing that most couples say they want, all the unusual stuff until after the wedding and then the first thing they say is where is the picture of me and the best man or me and my brother or sister. You have to do the traditional stuff and add some of the unusual in with it. I have found the most success with doing that. I guess I learned the hard way after 20 some years and countless weddings. Alot of it has to do with the type of wedding that you are shooting. The higher end and therefore the ones that you will make the most money at are usually the most conservative.

How about examples?...or links to examples, if you don't have your own.

I was just about to suggest that Big Mike!
P.S. I was just in Edmonton last weekend for a Roller Derby bout...boy was it cold up there!

I have found the most changes in the last ten years. Even the shots I made ten years ago I have to air brush now to post here. Things that were considered normal in a traditional wedding ten years ago, glare out at me now. Digital does have that advantage I will grant you.

the problem with examples is everyone wants to post their best work. Since Im not in this the way everyone else is, I can post what you really need to do. No one is going to find granny and the kids on the sofa, making them behave, the kind of shot on a forum. It is the kind of shot you should make to do a good documentary presentation, and granny will buy that shot as well. Shoot some for show and some for dough.

There are so many mundane shots that I can stick up here in order to be more complete. Most people who are still doing it for a living would rather show their best stuff and I don't blame them at all. I would do the same.

Groomsmen pictures....kind of hard because I've noticed that most guys don't really want to pose for pictures and especially for not more than like 5 minutes! Here is what I attempted to get at one of the weddings I did this summer.

This one is my favorite...I like that they look like they are in a good mood.

This was a pose that they requested to do. Young guys love their Capt. Morgan I suppose! This is the one they ordered too!

And, on this one, I was trying to get a little more creative, but I'm not sure if it really worked out compositionally.

You're not kidding! Since then, we've had plenty more snow...and warmer temperatures...It's above freezing today. The residential roads are full of sloppy, pudding like snow. In the last few days...I've seen at least 100 cars getting stuck/pushed out...and most people here have winter/all season tires. Thank goodness I drive a 4x4.

In a vain attempt to drag this back onto topic...a friend of a friend got married last month...and a good portion of people didn't make it because the weather had a major highway shut down. Even the hair dresser didn't make it...and the M.O.B. had to do all the girls hair. They didn't even have an indoor location to shoot the photos. I'm glad I didn't shoot that one.
