Well, well well.

Would you switch from 80-200/2.8 to 70-200/4 VRII?

Just thought some of you may find this interesting. I'm sure alot of you have already seen it, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

Nikon Patents:
18-300mm F/3.5-5.6
70-200mm F/4.0 VRII
A way to detach your lens from the backside of your camera (the switch would be there, not the lens, of course.)

For all of you who own the 80-200/2.8 two-touch, would you switch to a new 70-200/4.0?

I'm trying to understand why a rear release would be a good thing. I'm just not in tune when this would come in handy...

I wouldn't give up the fast lens in trade for the newfangled features. But FYI recently got the F.28 VRII and its an awesome lens!

I bet it is! I'm desperately trying to justify the purchase of one over my 80-200/2.8D.

I can't figure out why a rear release would be a good thing either. You still have to look at the front to make sure it will enter the mount correctly, and it would be awkward to have one hand grabbing the camera like you normally would, and the other twisting the lens on as you normally would. The hands will be backward, and it would be very awkward. I keep trying to figure out if another different modification could follow along with this to make it worth while. I can't think of one yet, but I'm sure they have to have something up their sleeve to coincide with this. If it is there, it would have to be something revolutionary with their mount. And I just can't see that happening right now. I have a feeling if we see this implemented, it won't be for another few years.

I can see problems with a rear mount removal button and people with larger than average noses or 'ham' fingers ;)
That said I can sort of see where it might be of use for some photographers who are working handheld from a shoulder bag; unclip one lens and swing it away fast before pulling up the second; it could prove (with practice) to be slightly quicker using the rear-mount removal button than the front, provided that its on the right side of the camera; if the rearbutton is on the left (where you don't have a hand whilst shooting) I can't see it giving any bonus at all.

Justification comes in the form of speed....focusing speed. Lens coating are a nice bonus.

I can see a need for an alternative f4 lens, cheaper for those that don't want to shell out $2k yet high IQ.
