What AF mode do you use and what botton do you use to AF ?

should be somewhat self-explainatory.

ok this may sound incredibly stupid, and if it is I apologies.. Are we talking about the single and continuous function that we find with the Release-mode selector? and if so if I use continuous for my photographs, then I use AF-C... am I saying this right? and did you understand what I mean or trying to say?

Sorry, just recently I am pushing myself to learn all the tools and functions of my camera, and trying to learn camera lingo.. but thanks for the help!

Modern cameras have a ton of options and I really use only a tiny fraction of them.
I too have so much more to learn, I think you really start learning photography when you understand how very little you really know, in the beginning I was so overwhelmed that I didnt even understood how much I need to learn, I simply know it was A LOT

It looks like you have a Nikon 3100 line

those items are the Release Mode Selector - page 5 and 53
of your manual
1 - Single Frame - press button and get one shot at a time
2 - Continuous - press button down and it keeps shooting until you release it
3 - Self Timer
4 - Quiet Shutter Release

I don't know if the d3100 has a button for AF-A, AF-S, AF-C focusing mode .. i'm checking the manual. it's probably in the menus.

you can see it in the middle far right of the rear screen as AF-A, AF-C AF-S

- you press the Info button on the bottom left of the rear of the camera
- use the multitool (round button on the right I assume) to select the focus mode on the monitor
- press OK to get selection of options,
- highlight an option then select OK

BUT
apparently you have
1 - AF-S Single Servo mode
2 - AF-F Full automatic mode
3 - and M Manual mode

then you select the AF-area mode of (not selectable in M mode)
a- Face Priority
b- Wide Area
c- Normal Area
d- Subject Tracking

it's different from the upper end bodies how this is selected and what options are available. Read your manual for more details.

I have a friend who I helped once who had a d3100 and noticed the similar controls on your picture. I had a d7000 which has more professional controls on it. A world of difference. On the d7000 and higher you can select and change all this stuff without taking your eye off the viewfinder, and you have more specific and flexible options.

I use AF-S for about 90% of my work, but when I go to the track, it's AF-C when I'm doing pans.
