what camera should i buy?

hi all,

new to the site. cant wait to get into it.

i need some help choosing my first camera. i will shoot mainly the kids, our new baby, kids sports (basketball and Football)

Nikon D3200 or Sony A57 or Canon D650D?

please give your thoughts. pros and cons?

Canon or Nikon, thats mostly a taste question. Try the cameras in the shop and decide which user interface you like more. Cant recomment Sony though, too many issues - problematic lens selection, an electronic viewfinder isnt a good idea for action photography, and also financial problems of the company.

Kids in action, thats very demanding on a camera. This demands a great autofocus. Compact cameras or these new system cameras like Olympus OM-D, Fuji X or Sony Alpha Nex probably wont do. Ideally something like Nikon D7000 and a real sport/action lens like the Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 VR, which are unfortunately outside your budget. As second option the entry level DSLRs you already mentioned.

Babies need a limited abilty for Macro. The Nikkor DX 18-55mm f/4-5.6 VR for example can manage 1:3.2, that should be enough for baby pictures. Dunno if Canon has something compareable.


P.s.: Oh, besides - the D5200 would be a good choice for you, since it has the same AF as the D7000.

According to your budget,you can choose canon T3i or T4i. Canon get great reviews from customers. The T4i is an recommendation because of the new function and design.You can shoot cinema quality HD video, the touch screen LCD, higher frame rate etc. If you are interested in them, look at more details about T3i and T4i , the difference, the reviews. Anyway, it's worth trying

I would keep an eye on your local craigslist photography section.
You can find 3200's every once in a while for a pretty good price.

They're nice intuitive cameras for beginners.
My colleague's wife is your typical MWAC, and I suggested the 3100 for her... and she's been loving it. She had no camera experience, really, and is out there having fun now.

In lens IS used to be better until Sony improved their in-camera stablization and dropped the flipping mirror. Now Sony can be used handheld at much slower shutterspeeds. With (3) 2.8 70mm to 200mm telephotos, for example, I don't see lens selection to be any sort of problem. The choice of lenses includes Minolta, Sony, Zeiss, Sigma, and Tamron.
