What can this lens adapter do for the Canon SX510?

It allows you to use filters with a 52mm diameter.

Are most standard filters 52mm? why can you not just attach a filter straight to the camera?

Filters come in many sizes but a lot of SLR lenses use 52mm, so there are plenty about. I don't think many P&S cameras have filter threads - I guess most of the people with P&S don't use filters.

Ahh I see! thank you

You could also use it for a screw-in lens hood and, possibly reverse coupling another lens for close-ups (with a second adapter).

Just looking at some accesories for the SX510 and came across this:

Maxsima - 52mm Lens Filter Adapter Ring for Canon Amazon.co.uk Electronics

What would be the purpose of this adapter? is it just for attaching filters?

Go to the "accessories" page of the camera's owner's manual. You should see a few Canon accessories listed there. Probably a UV filter (used primarily to keep the actual lens clean and free of scratches) and a lens hood, at least. You would use this adapter ring to mount those accessories to the lens.

There are other filters you could use with the camera, ND's and grads plus polarizers, though, as suggested, it's likely most P&S camera owners don't even know there are filters or why they would want them. The SX510 can also accept a "macro lens" which would attach to the end of the camera's existing lens. This is a popular macro adapter for the SX series cameras; Amazon.com Raynox DCR-150 Snap-On Macro Lens Camera Lenses Camera Photo There's also another version with slightly higher magnification. Whether you would require the adapter ring with this accessory is a matter of fit. The Raynox uses a sliding clamp system more like a lens cap and normally doesn't require an adapter though some people feel more comfortable with a more secure attachment to their camera. For that, you would want an adapter ring.
