I never said it was a sure thing that a filter would or could protect a lens in any way. But it's generally a good idea to have something over the lens, be it a filter or hood, to help protect the front element. In the long run it's all preference or what you want to do. I usually have a filter of some kind and a hood on my lenses. And I understand that a filter could do more damage than good in any circumstance, be it a simple bump or a drop.
