So by rap!, do you mean all hip hop or just mainstream club music? There are some very talented artist out there that you've probably never heard of that defy every convention that you believe you know about rap!.

I listen to a lot of genres but as a DJ i focus mainly on House, Breakbeats, Drum'n'Bass and a little Dubstep.

Other than that, Old School Hip-Hop, Skate Punk, Reggae and even some Classical and Opera make it into the playlist on occasion.

There's very rarely a genre which I categorically don't like. Rap/Hip-hop is one of those.

In every other genre, I tend to only listen to the examples which are doing interesting things harmonically, rhythmically, or demonstrate real, exceptional talent. This means that on any given day, I can go between Ambient/Electronic, Post-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Jazz, Classical (all periods/styles), Pop, and so on.

My personal favorites are
Classical (As you might guess, I'm a clarinet player, and focused on the 20/21st century styles in school. Stravinsky and Mahler are personal favorites),
Jazz (not 'smooth jazz'),
Post-Rock (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, God is an Astronaut),
Other Experimental styles (Capillary Action, Battles, Mr. Bungle, 65daysofstatic, Don Caballero, Hella, and The Mars Volta), and
Classic Rock (The Beatles and Pink Floyd especially)

I still maintain that rap isn't actually music (I mean there might be one or two bits that might possibly count as getting near musical - but most just seems to be some beat on the music with a guy chatting about his life over the top )


As for me - eh I don't know - I don't listen to all that much and don't tend to get bogged down fully into genres that I listen to.
I mean I like things like film music; Enya; Nightwish; general classical stuff; Anethesium; Miriam Stockley; Globus ; Kitaro



But then I also listen to a fair bit of gamer music, a rather under-represented area:

Overread: Agree completely on game music. To me though, the best stuff is going on in the smaller more independent projects. Games like Crysis 2 have excellent orchestral scores (that one was written by Hans Zimmer), but a lot of them feel kind of 'more-of-the-same' to me. However games like Mirror's Edge (Ambient electronic), Super Meat Boy (8-bit style with modern synths), Sword and Sworcery EP (an iOS game), as well as some others all have really great music.

EDIT: I nearly forgot Rebecca Black! Her song "Friday" really changed my life.
