I went to go check on the owls I have been taking photos of, and came across this little guy in the woods. He was only about 15' away, and he just sat there.

Looks like a baby barred owl. He is almost at the branching stage where he should be learning to fly a little by hopping from branch to branch. Doesn't look like he has tail flight feathers yet... I guarantee the parents were close by watching him. Oh my, just checked your other thread and those are great horned owls.. May not end well for this guy if he is out in the open. Great Horned Owls are vicious killers and if they are in the same neck of the woods :(

Thanks!
You can see the big hole in the tree below him in photo #1. I figured the parents were close by, I looked in the trees around me and didn't see anything. But I may have just missed them, they can be really hard to pick out. :)
The Great Horned Owls are only 100-125 feet away from these guys, in a really tall tree out in the open. this Barn owl was only about 15 feet up in a much smaller tree, but it is heavily wooded. I hope he makes it. :)

Barred, not Barn.. Barn Owls are whitish. The hole in the tree may be the nest so he might be able to scurry away at night time. There might be more in there also. I'm pretty surprised that Barred would nest so close to GHO. Great Horned will kill adult barred owls also..

LOL! It was late last night and my eyes saw the word, and my brain said something different!:048: I am much better this morning!:allteeth:
The hole in the tree is plenty big for them.

could be barred or screech owl more likely barred then screech

Barred is what coastalconn said it was. It is funny, I never would have thought I would be getting more Owl photos than any other bird. I see a lot of red tail hawks, But I just can't get that close to them! :( But I love seeing these owls. :)
