i think im done with my d40, i wanna move on to the next level.

what's the difference with nikon d300, d90 and d7000?
which one should i get for fashion/portrait photography?

The next level is not about the camera, it's about your photographic knowledge and skill.

I recommend you start learning all you can about lighting, lighting styles, lighting equipment, facial and body analysis, and posing if you want to do fashion/portraiture photography.

It would also be a good idea to get your keyboard shift key repaired.

thanks. sorry bout the typing, im holding my baby right now.

is d300 better than d7000?

It depends. What features matter to you? The D7000 is the newest of the bunch and has some nice features over its predecessor, the D90. Both of those bodies are considered mid-range DSLRs while the D300S is a semi-pro camera. It is geared towards an advanced shooter who does not care about cute scene modes which it does not have. Many pros use it as a back up camera for their main, full frame body.

The following page allows you to select all 3 cameras and compare their specs side by side:
Digital SLR Cameras | Nikon Digital Cameras | D-SLR Camera

In my (Newbish) opinion you really have to be more specific on what you want. What does another camera have that a d40 doesn't? What types of features are you looking for your camera to have? Is there a specific type of photography that you want this camera to be more efficient in then the d40? Or do you just have some money you want to put into photography? If that is so you might want to instead look at lenses or possible PP programs like lightroom, aperture, or photoshop (elements will probably be sufficient). Also looking at you gear list I saw that you didn't have any type of lighting or flashes which you might want to look into (Especially since you said you were into portraits and fashion). Best of luck,
Ethan

I agree. What features does the d40 lack and is it holding you back? Megapixels don't matter. I've never used the d40 but it has some features that I would like but my camera lacks. That camera should be able to produce amazing photos as long as you know what you are doing. Lighting is really important. I thought I would do everything with natural light but it just isn't feasible even outdoors on a nice day. Flash/lighting can take mediocre photos and make them amazing as long as you learn how to use lighting. For the price of a new camera you could probably get a killer portrait lens.

The d300 is around 900.00 for the body. The sigma 85 1.4 is around 900

The d7000 is around 1200.00 for the body
You could get the sigma 85 1.4 and a flash (or flashes depending on brand/type). Pick up some light stands and umbrellas and you'll be all set.

I wouid say most cameras have more going for them than a D40 i would rather have a Fuji X10 than a D40

i need more iso, live view, video recording, and mega pixels. so i think d300 would do? thanks for the input guys

More ISO- D700. Live view- D90. Video- D5100. Mega pickles-New D800.
