What to charge for an impromptu car photoshoot at a car show?

A photographer owns the rights to their photos. Best option seems to be to provide prints or lo-res copies/thumbnails for social media use.

If this guy just wanted a few pictures of his car, it seems like it could just be providing a few courtesy photos. If it gets to be more than that it could get into contracts, licensing usage, etc.

You just don't always know when you give someone photos where and how they'll be used. I feel like other than an occasional courtesy, photographers should get paid for their time and talent doing creative work (which can be hard to price).

That's a great story. It sounds like you did a fantastic job with what you had. I once took some photos for a friend who was getting married, and I was in the same boat. I had my trusty camera and a single lens, and we were limited on time and location, just like at that car show.

For pricing, $50 seems fair for your effort and the editing time. I’d suggest sending a couple of preview shots first to show him what he’s getting. Then, you can let him know how to pay. I’ve a seen senior photographer do something similar, and it’s a good approach. It keeps everything clear and professional.
