What tripod?

$50 doesn't even buy a quick release plate, never mind a head or legs. I agree with everyone above ^

A $50 tripod may help me.

My equipment will certainly fall over and break..... be replaced by State Farm, and I can replace with new toys

Re-read the bytom article and follow the advice not to buy on the cheap.

I am really glad I bought a Monfrotto 55CXPro 4. (I prefer the leg-locking system which is NOT a twist mechanism.)

I use a Kirk Ballhead.

I should copy and save this for as many times as I have said this in the past:

If all you are going to do it step out of the car onto a sidewalk and shoot from there, then go buy a cheap one that will hold the weight and pray the wind doesn't blow it over.

Get out on a hike in the woods or on a trail where there is no even ground or in a shallow creek and set up. This is where you need to think about the sturdiness of a tripod. On a rock outcropping etc etc. The guys are right, you get what you pay for.

My suggestion is either buy used or keep saving your money. I would not trust equipment on a cheap tripod for any reason. I use a giottos and love it. Stury, strong, doesn't move till you want it to move and I trust it completely.

Great shot, Joey! I certainly would only trust a strong tripod in that situation. Looks like yours paid off!
