Maybe the experts can give me some advice.

I've recently purchased a mid range Sigma AP0 DG 70-300 mm lens and I've found myself taking more shots with this lens. Now I know what it's intended for. Long range photography and an acceptable macro photography.

But what type of shots is a bog-standard 18-55 lens for? Obviously it is difficult for macro photography (depending on the subject), isn't really intended for landscape photography.

What do you think? Or rather, what specific type of shot do you use it for?

Answers on a postcard.

Probably not architecture. At 18mm some kit lenses have strong barrel-distortion (and naff ones like Sonys E-mount SEL1855 have pincushion at 55mm and wave distortion throughout, too). You could likely get decent walk-around/candids and general snaps in the 24-45mm range, ~F8.

Anything that fills the frame

Well, why not? You can use a 350mm for landscape photography, if the interesting features are 5 miles away. At 24mm, F8, on a tripod, it would give good pictures.

Check out this kid. He shot a lot of his shot with kit lens and entry level sony dslr.

: Welcome

I like his use of 16:9 portrait for nature shots. I was trying some of that recently with a NEX.

Good point.

I suppose it's best to view the lens as a good all-rounder?
