What would be some of my options if I wanted to have the exact same function of the flash getting the correct exposure as if it was attached to the camera, but using radio triggers? I'm really looking for two options here:

1: The absolute cheapest way to do this

OR

2: The one that will give me the most control

Using a Nikon D3100 with SB-700.

Thanks for any help.

Any wireless trigger / flash combo will give you the same exposures as it would on camera, if in manual mode. If you are wanting TTL... that is a whole different story. I know the Pocket Wizards Flex TT5 series is TTL capable... and I believe Radio Popper has a TTL capable set. Most, if not all, of the inexpensive wireless triggers are manual only.

I am assuming (based on the question) you are seeking TTL capability.... is that correct? I recommend Manual Mode.. much more accurate! I use manual about 90% of the time... even with my PW TT5 triggers.

You could use the SC-29 flash extension.

Or you could get a pocket wizard setup, including transmitter and receiver. That means more cost, but the light could be anywhere.

Cheap and TTL don't go together. So which do you want?

TTL via radio.

What about the Pixel King for Nikon? Seems to be getting good reviews on Amazon.

For OCF uses, unless you're another Joe McNally, wireless an TTL can give inconsistent results. Virtually, about the only time I use TTL is when the flash is hotshoe mounted.

Sounds like they have some serious issues with the AF focus beam.... but hey, they are cheap! You get what you pay for! :) You wil eventually find that manual is best in almost all situations anyway...
