I have the Nikon D7000 with the kit lens. I was wondering if getting the SB-900 is a better idea than getting a new lens? And is the SB-900 that much better than the SB-800/SB-700?

I'd get a new lens. Much better buy for me personally since I hardly use flash. I'd just save some money and buy the SB600, I doubt you would really need the 800/700 especially 900 if you're starting with a kit lens.

I would definitely go with a flash. You can pick up an SB800 for around $300 used and I actually prefer the 800 over the 900.

I was actually looking at the SB-800 over the 900. Would you guys consider buying a $199 lens? I know that you pretty much get what you pay for but I've read a lot of good reviews on a 35mm Nikon f/1.8 lens.

The 35mm 1.8 is a good lens, I would definately buy it again. What do you need more? a flash or a fast prime? Thats up to you.

I bought the SB-700 and the 35mm 1.8 lens and am really happy with both

I went out today and decided to buy the SB-700 (went with the 700 so I could also buy the lens and not break the bank) and the 35mm 1.8 lens........ Thank you all for your input!

I'm a newB with a D7000, and I got the SB-600 (discontinued) on the cheap and bought a 24-70 Nikon lens for a decent piece of glass

A flash does not replace a fast lens just as a fast lens can not replace a flash. Both have very different purposes and both are equally deserving of room in your kit bag. Understand what each is for and decide which you'll need to buy first in order to image your vision of the world.

As a matter of fact, they often compliment each other. I think the OP made a good choice.

I have a feeling that flash will make a huge difference. Kinda like night and day.

Check out this website and the links on the right. It was what really gave me an appreciation of what can be done with proper flash techniques and a lot of what I know, I learned there. http://neilvn.com/tangents/flash-photography-techniques/1-natural-looking-flash/
