Hey so ive been using the rebel xs and still love it. Im just wondering when is it time to upgrade? I mean at the moment i dont feel the need to id rather just invest in equipment. A friend suggested i get the T2i next but i told him i dont see myself upgrading until i have a reason too. Everyone tells me the rebel xs is too basic but i havnt tried any other slrs so i dont know any better.

When you NEED what the new camera offers over your old one.

Or when you have the disposable income to buy whatever you want for whatever reason.

If you don't notice the missing features you aren't missing them and don't need them. If you are serious about photography, you will eventually get to a point with that camera where you start reaching it's limits and need a new one.

When you feel your camera is restricting you from taking better pictures. Investing in good glass is more important.

Don't listen to the hogwash here...you should buy a new camera at least twice a year. There are good sales during the shows and you save so much it is worth the price. Plus you just sell your new-used equipment for a bundle, making your purchase not only smart, but fun. You will never be behind the the current technology and your friends will envy you...

You're on the right track in wanting to upgrade equipment first. A T2i with a kit lens isn't much of an upgrade over an XS with a kit lens. In the near term, get some great glass, a good quality tri-pod, maybe a nice speed light, etc. As your skills improve and your knowledge grows, you may very well find your XS to be limiting. As Bitter said, that's the point you realize you need a better body. The XS may be "basic" in its feature set, but it's still capable of taking great pics with good glass.
