Where do you get your picture frames from?

I typically go to Michaels as well. Aside from the typical 40%-50% off frames sales, they will often have a middle of the aisle rack with some frame sales ( I think stuff they are trying to clear out ) I got two frames the other day that were matted ( I think they had a 3" matte ) to fit an 11x14 picture. Pretty good sized frames. My wife had a 40% off anything (even sale items, which is rare for Michael's coupons ). They were $20 a piece before the coupon. So I got those two frames for $24 bucks. I often pick these up whenever I see sales, so that I can have a quantity on hand for whenever I want to sell some prints at an arts and crafts show or something. I don't care so much about the colors because I am not buying them for my house, so this frees me up a bit.

Heads up if you go to Michael's for custom framing they're sending it out anyway and charging you per their "middle-man fees". I know an employee there who told me why they were going to charge so much then it was going to their local framer anyway. For custom, save the trouble and visit a local framer.

goodwill.

Got a couple there but decent ones are few and far between.

I had much better luck at auctions where most buyers are looking for art (if any,) not frames :) I got beautiful old frames for $5; poster size simple but nice frames for $1, worth buying just for the glass ;)

Of course it helps that I cut my own mats because I don't worry about having standard size frames.

Michael's for most of my stuff. However, if I'm selling a print and they don't mind paying extra for a custom frame, I build my own. I work at a cabinet shop so I can get overstock moulding at a fraction of the original price...if not free. I personally like it when they want the custom frame. When doing a 32x40 print for a friend of a friend recently, the frame added another $300 to the original price. The overall outside dimensions of the frame came to 52"x60".

Lately, I have been going to a large, urban second hand store, where absolutely amazing frames are going for $3 to $7 each, with glass. Last month I bought a wonderful urban B&W street scene, framed by a local frame shop, double matted, hand-cut mattes, high grade materials all the way. $5. On the back was a local framing chain's info sticker; I know from experience that that shop's price on a framed print like that is $149.95 for the matting, framing, hanger wire, and glass. It's amazing what's showing up lately.

ikea or hobby lobby or michael. Hobby lobby and michael will have sales periodically where you can get good stuff for dirt cheap.

When you say a second hand store, do you mean something a long the lines of a pawn/thrift shop? Or a flea market?

I'm referring to a thrift type store, similar to a Goodwill, or a Red White and Blue store, or a Value-Village. This chain has a little more than 40 outlets, filled with donated merchandise, entire estates, etc, etc.

Interesting. Must have some great treasures in there.

IKEA frames are dull and lifeless. You need to be a bit creative when shopping in thrift stores for frames, you need to be able to look past the tacky artwork that may be in the frame and see what it could look like with your print. Also, spray paint, different color matting, alternate orientation can totally change the feel of a frame. You will buy some flops sure, but at the price of a couple bucks it is a risk worth taking.
