Which crop and other questions of boats...

Struggle with composition among other things, so curious on any thoughts here..
First, how is the photo ? Was it worth taking?
I know the sky wasn"t helping me, but I did use a soft grad on it.
then, was the crop the way to go here?
I cannot go back to this location, so looking for help on similar compositions in the future..

To be honest, neither one's really working for me. There's enough detail in the sky that it's not bothering me at all, but half-cropped boat in the foreground seems very harsh. Of the two images, I like the second one better because the reflection provides some balance.

I like the 2nd one, and I do agree with you the photo would have been so much better with a better sky.
