My wife asked me last night if I wanted to get a new lens. I would like to get some sort of 70-200. The two I am looking at are the new tamron 70-200 2.8 and the nikon 70-200 f4. Pretty much the same price but the f4 offers the lighter weight. Any suggestions?

What camera ?

I have rented the 70-200 f4 before, and I really liked it.

I'd get the 70-200 2.8. The VR1 is an option. If you don't need critically fast AF then you can get the 80-200 2.8( no VR)

I have the new Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens and it is an amazing lens. Fast focus, sharp as a tack, good bokeh, I have no complaints.

If on a budget, do what I did. Nikon AF 80-200 f2.8 (two ring)!!! Love it!!!
Grabbed mine for $600.00, and I'm in love.

Depends. I have the 80-200 2.8D, and have found myself getting tired of it. Sure, it's a nice lens, but I've had sharpness issues wide open, and it has a lot of CA when shooting bright whites. Also, the autofocus is slow, especially on my d7000. It's nice, but I can't wait to upgrade to the 70-200 vrI. It may be significantly more expensive, but if IQ and focusing speed are important, than I think that's a better choice, if you can afford it.

I do love my 80-200 for portraits... Sports, I can deal with the AF. I shoot a lot of high movement sports at collegiate levels. Volleyball, soccer, tennis, pretty much all that fun stuff. However, the AF is terrible for mens soccer and volleyball. I shot both with the newer 70-200 2.8 VRii and now I'm looking to upgrade.
