Which lens to take?

Hello everyone
I'm going to be traveling to Atlanta in a few weeks to see the grand kids. I would like to take only 2 of my lens because space is an issue. The first day will be spent indoors at a skating rink and the second day at a park weather permitting. I have the following lenses:
40
50
85
18-270
24-70
70-200

I really don't want to lug around the 70-200. Which 2 would you recommend?

I would take the 24-70 70-200, but that's just me.

My grandchildren range from 8 mo to 7 years old. At least 90% of the time, I am using my 28-70mm for their photos. I will probably take the 70-200 and the 2x adapter also, not for the kids, but for the road trip to their house.

If the main thing is taking photos of your grand kids and need to travel light, then I think 24-70mm with a 50mm prime or 85mm prime. I think I will choose the 85mm prime. Do you have room for a flash?

24-70 and 85. I LOVE my 85, and the 24-70 is GREAT for walking around.

I really don't want to lug around the 70-200. Which 2 would you recommend?

1. Skating rink. I assume that for Atlanta in May, that means it will be indoors. Which means craptastic lighting. Also, most of the time the kids will be some distance from you. And if you can't zoom in than you're going to be shooting pictures of your grandkids surrounded by 20 strangers. So that means for day #1, I'd bring the fastest zoom that you've got, whatever size it is. 200mm would be good but only if it's f2.8. If it's f4.5 or higher, it will likely be too slow for your purposes.

2. Day #2 is at a park outdoors....again, I suspect that the kiddies will be running around and won't be within 10-20 feet of you most of the time. You'll want a zoom (partially to get close and partially to crop out the strangers who are also in the park). Plus, you're likely to see birds or other critters besides grandchildren that you want to shoot. So I'd go with a zoom (though "fast" isn't as important here).

If you're really not going to shoot anything other than those two settings, you could get by with just one lens. But since you're likely going to be doing some shots indoors at the home sometimes, than I'd take the 50mm prime or the 24-70 as your second lens. Otherwise, I'd take one lens and make it the one that can manage #1 best (indoors at the rink). Which will probably be the 70-200mm (if it's fast enough).

I'm surprised that no one has suggested to just take the 18-270mm only. That one lens has all the focal range you should need. Not sure about the f-stop but it would be lighter to only carry the one lens.

It's most likely a 3.5-6.3 lens that won't work well indoors at a skating rink.

If the 70-200 is not 2.8, then I'd go with the 24-70 2.8 and the 85mm 1.8.

Thank you everyone. I think I'm going to go with the 24-70 and the 85. I would absolutely love to take the 70-200 if it were a road trip but I'm flying and that thing is a piece of luggage on its own. I do have a speedlite I'm taking, as I just got the cannon 600 ex and I'm anxious to try it out.
