I have a serious addiction to the Olympics. I will stay up ALL night long, just to watch events that, on their own merit, I wouldn't watch if you paid me (well, yeah, I probably would if you PAID me, but not otherwise). I watched Handball last night...HANDBALL, for goodness' sake!
Admittedly, I'm a sports fanatic anyway, but still, the Olympics just entrances me--more because of all the stories about the athletes than because of the actual events. What some of these athletes have already overcome in their lives is just remarkable! Some of them have overcome such odds just to make it to the Olympics, especially those from some of the small countries that don't have the resources of the US or larger European countries, etc.
Overall, I root for the USA. But I also root for the Underdog, the person who really overcome great odds just to be there, the one who really has NO chance to win, but they still have the GUTS to go out and compete with the world's best (Anyone remember Eddie the Eagle?!? Now, HE was an underdog!!).
What I love MORE than the USA winning, or even the underdog winning, though, is seeing winners accepting graciously and giving credit to their competitors; losers conceding graciously and praising the winner...and those very special moments when rivals come together and support and encourage a competitor who has met with disaster or been injured.
I HATE watching someone win, American or not, who seems arrogant about it. Saw one of those last night, and now I'm hoping they don't win any more medals...
