Why cant i get nice sharp landscapes?

Some newer lenses have a 'tripod' mode for their image stabilization (IS) feature.
In 'tripod' mode the IS is then able to correct for mirror slap and the small vibrations causes by the shutter mechanism.

The lighting is flat and the shutter speed seems a bit slow. Dont be afraid to use a layer mask to add emphasis to a particular part of the pic. Just be a bit more subtle than in the example below. Now the platform looks sharper but all I did was copy / paste a new layer and blur it a bit then rub out the circle to reveal the original pic.

And while I was there I copied out the circle and saved as a circle (PNG with a transparent alpha channel). Why do most pics have square edges anyway?

It is your picture do what you want to get the effect you want but have the effect in mind before you start to edit.
