Why do ugly cities look so damn good in black and white?!

I recently took a trip to new york, which despite being a wonderful place to visit, (highly recommended) was a bit of a dump. It was cold and wet, but unfortunately not snowy. I took a few reels of colour film and a few reels of black and white, the colour ones came out OK, but the city just looked kinda grotty, whilst the b/w pics made the city look as i had imagined it would. Why do cities always look beautiful in black and white photos, and so grotty in colour? But then doesn't everything look better in black and white!?!
