Yeah The 55-200mm he has is a piece of junk too. I have a friend that refers to these kind of lenses as dog food lenses. You can get some good shots out of them if you know what you are doing. I used to get great shots from my sony 18-70mm but that doesnt mean it wasnt a piece of junk.

You can buy the most expensive consumer lenses in the world, but you're missing the finer point: it doesn't mean you'll make good images just because you own them.

The instant "crap" label for kit zooms is a little silly. I concede that there are many limitations to my 18-135, but part of the photographers job is to be aware of the limitations and use the lense at settings where it's strongest.
Most kit zooms used correctly can yield good results consistently.
