Wide angle lens vs. Telephoto lens

I read that a wide angle lens pushes objects to the back. Can someone demonstrate an example?

That is by far the weirdest explanation I've heard.....

Wide angle - Zoom out.
Telephoto - Zoom in!

Check out this comparison chart - I know the image is a little small, but it gives you a decent, graphical idea of the "look" of various focal lengths.

You're referring to the depth that a wide lens gives versus the compression that a telephoto gives. Basically, with a wide lens, objects closer to the lens will appear much larger in comparison to those farther away, while a telephoto lens will make them look closer to the same size.
