Wikipedia

Well I actually like Wikipedia. I use it to do two things mostly. Looking up information on bands/performers and botanical stuff. It is almost always good for both.

And therein lies the problem. An encyclopedia that is "almost always" good is no good at all. I always double-check my sources when I am doing any sort of research, but I will also ALWAYS start with something far more reliable than Wikipedia. For example, for botanical stuff, I'd go to one of the university botanical sites; they are always reliable and you can contact them and verify where they got their information.
Wikipedia has some well-written, well-researched, informative bits of information. And some absolute nonsense. I don't really like taking a chance on which I'll get.

i use wiki for quick information. but not for anything i need to rely on.

my kid is NOT allowed to use, per school regulations.

it's pretty much outlawed. any report that requires research, wikipedia is NOT allowed to be a source. and the teachers check.

it's blocked from the school servers as well, so they can't even access it from school computers.

I was wondering about that. I have heard of students writing papers and citing Wikipedia... Good to know that the teachers there make them read real books, lol. I'm actually surprised that it's blocked though.

And I use it for the same thing - look something up quickly. Further research, if required, would be done somewhere more specialized to whatever it was I was looking up.

yeah, i don't know if it's all schools of course. but, all toledo public schools don't allow it.

the blocking.. i assume is just to enforce it's discouragement. just like porn sites, facebook, youtube.. all blocked.
