I need to know if I should get a Canon DSLR or stay a Nikonist but just get a new Nikon DSLR because I dont think my P510 is working out so well.

If you are going to use it in auto, it's not worth it. If you are going to learn to use it to it's fullest potential it's worth buying a DSLR.

It's about what fits YOU best. Go to a store and play around with each one. Change settings, fire off a shot... see how they feel and how they work. Look thru the menus... One should feel more right to you than the other.

In another thread he said that his GPS wasn't working, so not sure if this is a continuation of the last thread. I suspect that this is more of a case of him not being familiar with his camera than the camera itself not working.

My guess too.
Which would say that you should probably learn to be able to use the controls on the camera you have. Not the GPS but ALL of them... You have the ability with that camera to shoot in aperture priority, shutter priority and full manual as well as all of the controls for focus points, etc. In shot it does all of the same basic things as a DSLR. Until you are using all of that and hitting it's limits? Upgrading doesn't make much sense. Add to that you have a zoom that is the equivalent of everything from macro to 180mm zoom. That would mean purchasing several rather expensive lenses to get all of that with a DSLR. Perhaps you WILL want to upgrade, but until you find a reason other than having money to burn it's kind of silly.

If you don't know the answer to your own question, you are not ready to commit to a DSLR.
